Time with Eddie – 2014

1 / 5 / 161 / 11 / 16

I have two little brothers and neither of them is smaller than me anymore…haven’t been for a loooong time.  So now we say they are my bigger younger brothers.  This guy, down below, he’s so awesome. After high school he joined the US Marine Corp. He did amazing and truly hard things. We are so blessed that when it was done, he came home in one piece and he came home a very, very good man. He continued on with the Reserves for a number of years and now he is finishing his degree.  I’m so proud of him I could just burst.

20150114_134758-24

Both of my brothers are amazing and fun guys and I know I am so very lucky to have them.  As we’ve gotten older, our chances for 1 on 1 time have dwindled.  So when plans changed and a trip I made home ended up being during a time when the only person ‘home’ was Ed, we took advantage of some quality brother/sister time!!

20150114_134748-23

We went out to dinner in the cute ‘downtown’ by my parents’ house and then walked around the lake.  We stopped and got Gelato and he taught me about Snapchat. I sent my first Snapchat to our other brother – thank goodness for younger siblings who are willing to teach their old sister about the new cool stuff!

20150114_134729-22

For this layout, I used Fancy Pants’ line Everyday Circus. There are elements of this line that are just so perfect for Ed. Like that cute tiger. When he was little, Eddie loved tigers.  His wish was to have a tiger that he could ride like a horse, lol.  Also, I love the “Special Attractions” arrow…we’re pretty special 🙂  The sticker on the bottom of the page reads, “If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.” Maya Angelou.

We are pretty good at love and support in my family, so I’m pretty sure Ed already knows we think he’s amazing.  Just in case, though, it never hurts to remind the people you love how wonderful you think they are <3

First Family Photo – 2010

12 / 10 / 15

December 2010 – I waited and waited AND waited for snow.

I really wanted to get a simple family photo (Izzy, Colin and myself) with snow to send out in Christmas cards that were to double as our wedding Save-the-Date.  But the weather gods said “No! No snow for you.”

On with Plan B!

20150114_135252-32

camera with timer
tripod
husband-to-be
one adorable labradoodle
new plaid Christmas shirt
backyard
…that was Plan B.

Getting Izzy to look at the camera at the same time Colin and I were looking at the camera proved to be more difficult than I imagined. We got this one good shot in the end though!

I would also just like to point out that Colin and I did NOT coordinate our outfits on purpose – that was a very happy coincidence (me more happy than Colin, I don’t think he really cared). Burgundy red and jeans for the win!

Do you coordinate your loved ones’ clothing for special events?  (or do you get coordinated by a loved one??) I feel like I don’t very often.  If he asks me ‘what should I wear’ I’ll give him my ideas and he often goes along with that…or he doesn’t and comes up with his own plan. I’m pretty type A, but to me, being type A gets exhausting sometimes and I don’t actually WANT to do all the planning and coordinating.  (Does that make me type AB+ or something? I don’t know.) So I like it when Colin takes it upon himself to plan his own style and such.  Plus, then I get some happy surprises, like how perfectly he matched me that day!

20150114_135227-30

I made this layout last year (2014) with some kits I got from the Hip Kit Club.  The kits didn’t actually include much of this deep red, but there were a couple of pieces so I immediately thought of this photo and how perfectly they coordinated.  It was fun to do a December Flashback layout.  I love to reminisce, especially about Christmas. Do other people take photos from years back and scrap them?  I’m new to this scrappy world, so I have lots of old stories I’d like to document.

To this point in time (Dec 2015), I haven’t done many ‘current events’ layouts because I’m so excited to tell about the past…I wonder if others might think that’s a strange way to go about it – do tell! What’s your strategy? Do you have a scrapbooking or memory keeping manifesto of sorts? Or do you just scrap whatever strikes you at the time?

I don’t remember which companies and lines all of these elements are from, but I think there is some Elle’s Studio: paper (Christmas trees) and wood veneers & green no peeking tag? Don’t quote me on that though…The red mini letter stickers are Webster’s Pages I believe. I drew the ‘Celebrate’ on there myself and I punched out some of those green red and silver snowflakes from some foil card stock I’ve had for a long time.

The grey tag at the top is actually from a pack of tags I got at Paper Source.  It can be pulled out from behind the photo to reveal my journaling, which is similar to the story I told in this post 🙂

20150114_135241-31

This is truly one of the first 12×12 layouts I ever made
and I don’t hate it…
Do I see lots of things I’d like to change?
You betcha.
I do like to look at this one and see how far I’ve come, though.  The fact that I can look at this and pick out areas I could do better and also know how I could make them better, that’s a big deal!
I’m growing – finally! ha!

My Bachelorette Entourage

12 / 2 / 1512 / 2 / 15

Remember this.

My friends are beautiful.  Inside and out.

20150114_131016-14

When I was younger, just a child really, I never for a moment thought my life would be so FULL of amazing, kind, intelligent people.  I often felt like the oddball as a kid.  I didn’t think there were people in the world who would want to be around me. As I got older, though, those people found me somehow.  I’m quite sure now that God had a plan for me. They love me just as I am and because of who I am.

My bachelorette party stands out in my mind as a perfect reminder of how lucky and blessed I am to have such lovely girlfriends. (My sister was there too, but she’s my friend as well my sister, so she definitely counts as one of my lovely girlfriends! Can you pick her out in the photo below??)

Not everyone could make it, of course.  My friends are spread around the country.

No one understands how difficult and expensive your mid to late 20s are when you factor in the modern day wedding more than myself.  I have been very, very honored to be asked to stand up in 7 weddings.  That’s a lot of bridesmaid dresses, hairdos, mani-pedis, Showers, engagement parties, bachelorette parties, air plane tickets, hotels…you get the picture. And that doesn’t take into account all the other weddings my husband has been in and the ones we’ve simply attended as guests.

My point is that it didn’t bother me an ounce that some girls couldn’t make it.  There were babies being born and other weddings taking place.  Also, it was a destination party for most of my friends and that can be difficult.

Of course I’d have loved to have them there, but not at the expense of the other important things going on in their lives.  20150114_131025-15I was amazed how many ladies did come, though!  Abbey was lovely enough to host the party at her home in Chicago.  She invited everyone to stay the night (even though she didn’t know them all!) We had margaritas and tacos for dinner at her place.  We went on the Architecture Canal Tour, which is one of my very favorite things to do in the city. We went to the top of Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) to check out the view and newly installed glass floor inserts – crazy & awesome! We played silly, lovely party games.  There was a karaoke bar!!  We handed out goofy stickers to gay men in Boy’s Town (they loved it.)  It was just fun!!

20150114_131043-16I had this great picture from our trip to the top of Willis Tower.  It’s just one those green screens behind us and they place different images on the screen.  For a hefty sum, you can purchase the images.  Well, it was absolutely worth it.  I especially love that because I was wearing a green shirt, the image was transposed onto my shirt as well…kind of like urban camouflage! This is the only picture I have of all of us together and it’s perfect.

20150114_131102-17I don’t remember who makes all these papers – they are all different brands.  I really wanted the “Remember This” to be the title, though, and I’m so glad I could make that work.  I outlined it with turquoise gel pen and put the quotation mark stickers around it.  I’m still struggling with embellishment clusters…I’m not completely happy with that aspect of this page, but that’s okay.  I love how all the papers came together and the colors as well.

Paper coming together, colors coming together, good friends coming together…fantastic.

The Story of 3 Years

3 / 26 / 1512 / 2 / 15

In October, Colin and I celebrated our 3rd wedding anniversary – go us!

Truly, when I think about these last few years, sometimes it feels like our wedding was just yesterday…other times, it feels like there’s no way it has only been three years, like we’ve always been together; like we’ve always been a team, doing things with and for each other.

Regardless, the last three years have been the happiest of my life and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

Our anniversary was on a Wednesday this year, so we decided (kinda last minute) to both take the day off and just hang out together with the dogs.  It was lovely to have a day together in the middle of the week.  We didn’t do any projects around the house, we didn’t run any errands.  Lovely.

In the evening, we dressed up a bit and headed to Boulder for dinner.  We went to our favorite Sushi place – great food, awesome atmosphere. Colin lived in Japan for a few years as a child and has lots of memories of the food he ate while there.  One of his favorite dishes is Yakitori.  It’s hard to find here in the Denver area, but this place has it and they do it really well.  It’s kind of a pricy restaurant, so we only go on special occasions – perfect reason!

20150114_131203-21

After a delicious dinner and some saki, we walked around Pearl Street.  It was pretty quiet compared to the weekends – so nice.  Colin had the idea to go to this bar that’s below the Boulderado Hotel.  It’s called License No. 1 now, it used to be called The Catacombs.  Apparently it was given the first liquor license in Boulder back in the day, so they changed the name and gave the bar a facelift.  Colin wanted to go there because they had an air hockey table.

When we got there we were sad to discover that the air hockey was gone.  We settled for pool for instead.

It was an intense game – I was winning for most of it.  I was working on the 8 ball while Colin still had 4 of his left on the table. Then, suddenly, he got hot and knocked them all in, ended up winning – I couldn’t believe it!!  He refused me a rematch (because usually I do win…he wanted to savor it…I don’t blame him.)

20150114_131137-20

As we were heading out, I noticed that there was a photo booth – exciting!  We didn’t have any photos from our evening, so this was a great chance to capture us together.  We got a little goofy and did some kissy ones – what can I say, we’re in love, can’t help it!

20150114_131123-19

I used the photo booth photos for this layout – really fun to use something different and unique.  The circles cutout on Kraft paper is from the Silhouette store and it’s on top of some light green card stock.  Most of the patterned papers are from a couple 6×6 pads – Fancy Pants Burlap & Bouquets and Dear Lizzy Lucky Charm.  I think the phrase stickers are also Burlap and Bouquets.

20150114_131114-18

I loved that I had that yellow tag with the number 3 on it and with a circle, so fitting!  I added some Heidi Swapp rub-ons to the tag and around the photos for some finishing touches.

I haven’t done many layouts, I think I have about 10 or 12 to my name.  This one is definitely my favorite, though.  I love how the colors and patterns and circles all came together.  I love the story I was able to tell and the memories we will keep.

2015.365 Photo Challenge – Week 4

2 / 12 / 152 / 12 / 15

2015 365 Week 4-01

Day22 – Liquid: I’m pretty much the luckiest lady in the world as Mr. Faber makes me amazing coffee every darn morning.  This is seriously good stuff.  I should really say he makes me a latte every morning.  I realized over the holiday that I never even went into Starbucks to get a holiday drink (and I’ve always loved those!) The ones my sweetie makes are so. much. better.

Day23 – Complimentary: Blue and Coral (a relative of orange) envelopes – I have a thing for envelopes. And paper.

Day24 – Jewel: My engagement ring has a little bit of a history.  It’s over a hundred years old.  The stone was given to my mother-in-law from her mother-in-law who got it from her husband’s family. It’s a really pretty stone and I love that it has a story.

Day25 – Words: House Made Fireball!!!  I didn’t get to try it. This was at a restaurant called Bourbon that is inside of the new Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, CA.  It was really good (and expensive).

Day26 – Bokeh: I don’t know how to produce bokeh so I took this picture of the stunning sunset I saw while in Santa Clara on my run that evening.  The colors were fabulous.

Day27 – Today: The offices in Santa Clara of the company I work for are on an old campus.  Our meetings were in the Bell Tower and it has a lot of really great original features.  I really liked this banister and the way the light from the huge window hit it in the afternoon.

Day28 – Pretty Things: I found these adorable gold heart paper clips at the office store one day.  They are great for scrapbooking projects!

2015.365 Photo Challenge – Week 3

2 / 4 / 15

2015 365 Week 3-01

Day15 – Eyes: Olaf was a Christmas gift to Penny this last year and he has. been. everywhere. in our house and yard.  Both dogs love him and he gets dragged in and out all day long.  As I have mentioned, I do have a soft spot for snowmen and Olaf is no exception – I think he’s really cute.

Day16 – Letter: I have a little mantra going for myself this year: “Breathe. Believe. Be.” I created a pretty poster for my office to hang above my computer with water colors, my handwriting, the Silhouette and some gold paint.  It turned out pretty well, really.

Day17 – Eggs: Mr. Faber made me eggs that morning…he’s so good to me.

Day18 – Boxes: My lovely friend, Tess, and her hubby came to visit in January and she brought me a box of these super-delicious dark chocolate sea salt caramels from a confectionery in her hometown.  I LOVE these and I have treated myself to one each evening since receiving them.

Day19 – A Song: This is photo from December that I did some post processing on for this prompt because A. I adore it, and B. It was perfect for the prompt!  My parents had a huge party (60+ people) while my siblings and I were all home in early December.  We have a rather large family and many of my cousins now have children of their own.  This is a photo of one of my Uncles singing while holding his grandson. We had a lovely carolling session (lots of great voices in our family and friends circle).

Day20 – Diagonal: A cute bag that my friend’s mom gave me. It came in a set of three, all different sizes. Bright green and navy is one of my favorite color combos – I use them a lot, especially when I’m traveling.

Day21 – Contrast: My dark brown Penelope against/in the snowstorm. swoon.

2015.365 Photo Challenge – Week Two

1 / 16 / 151 / 21 / 15

2015 365 Week 2-01

Hi!

My intention was to post this on Wednesday, but I ended up getting home late last night.  I pulled all my photos from the week together, but I ran out of energy and decided that the world would not end if I posted today instead.  I hope I’m right!

Day8 Quiet: The positive to Penny waking me up at really early hours is that I often get to see amazing sunrise colors in our backyard.  The pinks on this particular morning were so pretty that I ran and grabbed my phone from the room – and just in time because the colors faded quickly after this.

Day9 Nostalgia: I have very fond memories of these Christmas Village buildings from my childhood.  They belong to my Aunt and I was always mesmerized by the light that came from the windows and the snow painted on the roofs.  The village has been passed on to me now as my Aunt doesn’t have an ideal space for it anymore.  I feel like I’ve inherited a Christmas Treasure. I have it set up next to our fireplace and have thoroughly enjoyed having all the lights off and just sitting in the glow from the fire, the Christmas tree and the village. I’m in the process of packing up Christmas this week and hate to put the village away most of all.

Day10 Sleepiness: This is my friend’s son who is a little over a year old and so stinkin’ cute.  We went shopping that day and when we were in a candy shop he found this Light Saber toy that had M&Ms in it.  When you push the button on the handle it lights up blue.  Well let me tell you, he just thought it was so amazing.  Being the awesome Auntie that I am, I absolutely bought it for him. When he fell asleep holding his Light Saber it just warmed my heart.

Day11 Something Green: The Green Bay Packers were playing in the Divisional Playoff that day against the Dallas Cowboys so this was a no-brainer prompt for me.  Of course I waited until after they won to take this photo to make sure that I didn’t jinx them!  The Pack is on their way to Seattle for the Conference Playoff!  Honestly, I don’t have high hopes for this game…but ya never know! Go Pack!!!

Day12 Silliness: I LOVE SNOWMEN. I know it’s silly, but whatever. Mr. Faber got me this LED snowman at a Super-Nerds Conference (that’s what I call the Super Computing Conference) and he’s become my good buddy.  I enjoy having him around while I work in my office.

Day13 Humor: This would be a photo of Penny sleeping with her nose right in Izzy’s butt (who is also sleeping.)  They are gross and also hilarious. They make life awesome.

Day14 Upside Down: I waited all darn day for something upside down to make itself known to me, but nada. Finally, at dinner with my girlfriend I noticed that the crayons on the table were upside down – boom! done!

Cheers everyone!

365 Photo Challenge – Week One

1 / 8 / 151 / 8 / 15

2015 365 Week 1-01

Happy New Year!  2015 is here and I couldn’t be happier!  I was very ready for 2014 to come to an end.  I know that January 1st is just another day – it comes after December 31st and before January 2nd.  Yet, for some reason, this year it really marked an ending and also the beginning of something new for me.  I am completely embracing my new beginning.

My good friend did a 365 Photo Challenge last year and he enjoyed it so much that he decided to try organizing his own this year – which I thought was awesome!  Every day, I get an email with a prompt in it.  The prompt is just a suggestion; something to get us motivated to look for a good, fun, interesting shot. The prompt can also be a challenge of sorts if we wish. For example, the prompt for Day 2 was actually ‘Umbrellas.’ If I really wanted to challenge myself, I could have pulled out my umbrellas and tried to get an interesting angle or a neat exposure.  However, on Jan 2nd I was still recovering from the holidays and a photo of my sleepy, fluffy dog was more my pace…

Day1 A New Year: We have an amazing friend who’s birthday is Dec 31st.  He and his wife always throw a birthday party on Jan 1st.  It was a wonderful day to celebrate!

Day2 Napping Izzy: That’s Isabelle, one of our labradoodles, sleeping on ‘Big Puppy.’ This photo well represents how we all felt on Jan 2nd – exhausted!

Day3 Color: The gorgeous completed puzzle that my MIL gave me for Christmas.  It’s by Liberty Puzzles and was so cool/difficult.  Check them out! One of my brothers visited us for the holidays and he helped me put it together.  We pretty much didn’t stop working on it for 24 hours (except to sleep and heat up some food!), it was really addicting. One of my girlfriends came over for dinner and she ended up being sucked into our puzzle mania as well.  It was the perfect winter holiday task.

Day4 Messy: The pieces from said puzzle…a beautiful mess in my opinion!

Day5 Night: My husband and I both stopped in our tracks as we exited the ‘Y’ that evening.  The sky was completely stunning. I did enhance this photo to bring out the colors more, but these colors are truly how we saw them.

Day6 Repeating: I leave these star lights up all year on our back patio.  I love them!

Day7 Through My Window: Another beautiful sunset sky as seen through the window at the ‘Y.’ Not a bad view to have from the elliptical! (Especially when it’s only 20 degrees out…brrr.)

I got a new Galaxy Note 4 right after Thanksgiving this year and I intend to do most of my photography on that.  The camera on it is really nice – one of the better phone cameras out there – and I always have it with me.  I also acquired a Canon Selphy Printer over the holidays which allows me to print 4×6 photos via a wireless connection from the phone. This has been working so well for my scrapbooking projects and I find that I do more pages when I’m able to print things off at my own pace.

I do also have a Canon 60D which is a really great camera, and I know I’m really lucky to have it, but I typically only pull that baby out for special occasions such as family gatherings or vacation trips.  I’m honestly not very savvy with the DSLR.  I think if I used it more I’d be better, but it’s size and weight make me want to leave it behind more often than I should.  Perhaps this challenge will encourage me to take it out to play more this year…hey, anything is possible!!

If you are interested in joining the same 365 Challenge that I’m doing, just message me and I’ll help get you added to the list so you get the email prompts! Here is the list of prompts for January, and I think you can also subscribe via that page on the right.

If anyone has done these challenges before and has recommendations or insight, please do pass it along!

I hope Week 2 of 2015 finds you happy, healthy and crafty <3
